Three Famous Athletes Who Smoke Marijuana

While there are some law and order types that will always be against it, there are many people who smoke weed. For most people, weed is not a big deal. There are many reasons it’s illegal, from the “war on drugs” to the protection of the logging industry, to the fact that many think marijuana affects the brain, but the simple truth is that plenty of people smoke weed.

Including athletes! If you’re curious about famous athletes that smoke weed, rest assured that there are many of them. Below are a few, but this is in no way a complete list.

Micheal Phelps

For reasons that can only be attributed to a slow news day, there was a big fuss when it came to light that Phelps smoked marijuana. After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, a photograph of Phelps smoking from a bong was released into the general public.

He stated he understood that he’d exercised poor judgment during the photograph in an apology to the masses. Since Phelps managed to appease the mobs by admitting he was wrong, the media left him alone. Some people even pointed out that in spite of his weed smoking he still won multiple goldmedals.

Either way, the matter of Phelps’ weed smoking habits hasn’t come up since.

Ross Rebagliati

Few people would be surprised by hearing that an extreme sports athlete smokes marijuana. So it should be no surprise that Rebagliati, the first Olympic slalom gold medalist, is a person who smokes. Unfortunately, the Olympics drug testing committee was surprised. When they found trace amounts of marijuana in his blood stream, they stripped him of his medal.

He no longer works as an athlete, but since leaving the sport he’s still been quite influential. He’s become a well known public speaker, advocating for legalized marijuana by pointing out how it doesn’t ruin a healthy lifestyle. Still, even he believes it’s a performance enhancing drug. It helps give athletes a sense of relaxation and confidence that they might not have otherwise.

Jordan Schafer

Driving while under the influence is always a bad idea. So when Schafer, outfielder for the Houston Astros, was pulled over and arrested it was likely the right decision. A police officer caught him smoking a joint while stopped at a red light. Since smoking weed can cause a decrease in reaction time and hand-eye coordination it was a bad idea to smoke.

That said, the officer found less than an ounce, as well as three peanut butter cups with marijuana baked in. With that amount, Schafer was obviously doing it recreationally and had no plans to sell.

As you can see, anyone and everyone might smoke weed. There’s no specific type of athlete that’s more likely to smoke. Whether one is a professional swimmer, baseball player, basketball player, or snow boarder, people everyone enjoy the sensation of being stoned.

So if anyone tries to tell you that smoking weed will ruin your ability to succeed in life, mention these athletes. They were all professional athletes while smoking marijuana. Hard to say a person’s life is ruined when they hit that level!
